Breaching Humpback Whale

I have been trying to get a photograph of a breaching Humpback Whale on whale watching tours for several years. With no success.

A breaching humpback whale in the Strait of Juan de Fuca in northwest Washington.
Breaching Humpback Whale

My luck finally changed on a tour last week when a Humpback swimming near the tour boat breached five times. During the first breach the whale was so close to the boat that I couldn’t get all of the massive creature in the photo. Of course that was also the best breach of the five with the whale coming almost completely out of the water.

However, as it moved away from the boat and breached again I was able to get several good shots of the entire whale, including the photo above. What an amazing experience to photograph this magnificent animal.

Of course the experience just makes me want to get back out on the water with the whales again!

Photo taken with Nikon D500 camera and Nikon 80-400mm lens.
