Gray Day At Thor’s Well

I took this photo in September on a gray day at Thor’s Well on the Oregon coast. Thor’s Well is a large sinkhole in the coastal rocks near Cape Perpetua and Yachats, Oregon, that appears to drain water from the Pacific Ocean. Waves crash over the rocks that surround the well, especially at high tide, then stream into the well. The well is a unique and amazing subject for photography.

When my wife and I visited, some visitors were going right up to the edge of the well to get photos. One individual was soaked to the skin when a large wave hit the rocks and was lucky he didn’t fall in. I chose to shoot my photos from further back with my camera on a tripod. Having to crawl out of Thor’s Well with waves crashing all around is too high a price to pay for a selfie!

This photo is available in prints as described below but also as the January photo in my Oregon Coast 2023 Photo Calendar.
