Blue is my favorite color so I loved photographing these Ellensburg Mountain Bluebirds. The spring and early summer is a great time to photograph these colorful birds on Umptanum Road just outside of town. Here are a few photographs from a drive down Umptanum Road in mid-June. The birds’ magnificent blue colors were on full display that day!
My favorite photograph from the trip is the photo above of a male bluebird with a grasshopper. The bird flew into a nesting box with the grasshopper just after I took a series of photos. I assume it was taking the grasshopper to some young birds in the nest box.
Below is another favorite shot of a male Mountain Bluebird perching on a bush on the side of the road. This bird wasn’t very concerned about me as I was shooting out of our car window. He stayed on the bush for several minutes and I was able to get a number of good photographs. It was great that it was overcast for much of the mid-day photography as the clouds kept the light from getting too harsh.
My gear for taking these photos of the Ellensburg Mountain Bluebirds was a Nikon Z8 camera with a Z 180-600 mm lens and a 1.4X teleconverter.
