Edmonds Waterfront Birds

I have been getting out with my camera frequently this month to photograph Edmonds waterfront birds. Summer is somewhat the “slow season” for bird photography in the Pacific Northwest, however there are still some interesting subjects. Osprey, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles and Caspian Terns are regular visitors to the waterfront of Edmonds, Washington. Then in August the fall migration begins (even though it isn’t yet fall) and some interesting birds begin to pass through.

There are plenty of gulls on my local waterfront but I have a hard time telling them apart, and have to admit I don’t find them particularly interesting. However, terns (a similarly sized white bird) are another story. These birds, like the Caspian Tern above, are better looking than most gulls. They are also a challenge to photograph as they dive rapidly under the surface to get a fish. I’m still trying to get a good shot of a tern breaking the water.

Osprey are another bird that I enjoy photographing as they hunt over Puget Sound. Like the terns, Osprey dive beneath the water to snatch a fish, then head back to their nest with the catch.

Birds like this Western Sandpiper are starting to show up as they migrate from their breeding area in Alaska. This cooperative little bird was busily scavenging on the beach and would come quite close to me.

Then there are always the surprises! My previous post was about this unexpected Tufted Puffin that just spent several weeks in the local waters.

I guess maybe the “slow season” of the year for Edmonds waterfront birds isn’t really all that slow!
