I often walk for exercise on Sunset Avenue in Edmonds, Washington, where I live. The street sits above the beach and Puget Sound and the views are amazing. Even so, when I walk for exercise, I typically don’t bring my camera. If I bring a camera I make frequent stops and don’t get any exercise. A few days ago during my walk I was treated to an amazing Edmonds winter sunset. Luckily I had broken my normal exercise rule and had a camera with me so I was able to get a photo of the fantastic sunset.

Earlier in the walk I snapped the photo below of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train heading north along Puget Sound. That’s Mount Baker (one of the tallest mountains in Washington’s Cascade mountains) in the background. I’m a big train lover so it’s always great to get some interesting train shots along with the landscapes.

I always have my phone with me, but I still think the photo quality is better with one of my Nikons. I also have better options with my Nikon lenses for zooming in and out to compose photos. iPhone cameras are amazing but not as good as a digital SLR for my photography. These photos were taken with a Nikon Z50ii and a Z 28-400mm lens. This relatively new (to me) camera is proving to be a great light walk-around camera and will accompany me on more of my walks. Hopefully I won’t stop too often to take photos and will still get some exercise!
